FHI 360’s East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) builds the capacity of national and local governments to deliver integrated health and social services that address their countries’ human development challenges. Based in Pretoria, South Africa, ESARO provides support to projects in 17 countries and partners with more than 1,300 nongovernmental and community-based organizations.
Since the early 1980s, FHI 360 has provided strategic leadership to the region. Our health portfolio includes programs to bolster the delivery of HIV prevention, care and treatment services and to assist with the integration of nutrition and livelihoods into HIV and home-care support for orphans and vulnerable children. We work to improve the detection of tuberculosis (TB) and promote community participation in the integration of services for HIV and TB. In addition, we partner with the public and private sector on the prevention and effective treatment of malaria, particularly for pregnant women and children, and on improving family planning and reproductive health services. We also address emerging health challenges, including cardiovascular disease and other noncommunicable diseases, and strengthen laboratory services for disease surveillance and diagnosis.
Our staff have partnered with ministries of education to expand access to and support for quality and equity in education. We are working with government and local organizations to improve education for girls, enhance teacher training and accelerate the integration of information and communication technology into teaching and learning.
We work to strengthen the leadership of national and community organizations and increase the transparency of government agencies. Our civil society programs work with local communities to build capacity for effective programs that bring about positive change.
ESARO staff have expertise in critical technical areas, including education, environment, food security, economic development, social marketing and behavior change communication, health, clinical research and laboratory strengthening.
