HIV

FHI 360 supports countries and communities around the world to realize the goal of ending the HIV epidemic as a public health threat by 2030. 

From the earliest years of the epidemic, FHI 360 has conducted research; implemented prevention, care and treatment programs; and addressed the structural issues that drive the epidemic. We do this by partnering with funders, ministries of health, the private sector and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). 

Now, with nearly 40 years of experience in HIV programming, we are charting the path to a sustained HIV response centered around local leadership and equitable access to person-centered services.

At FHI 360, we generate evidence and provide technical assistance to address the complex nature of HIV across populations.

Adolescent girls and young women

To support adolescent girls and young women who face multiple intersecting vulnerabilities to HIV, FHI 360 conducts a range of gender- and youth-focused HIV prevention, care and treatment programs, as well as research.

Capacity strengthening to sustain the HIV response

We partner with hundreds of local institutions involved in addressing the HIV epidemic, including those led by vulnerable populations, to build local capacity, promote sustainable HIV programs and foster local ownership.

Care and treatment

We improve access to — and the standards of — HIV care and treatment for all populations.

Vulnerable populations

We are a global leader in delivering HIV services to meet the unique needs of vulnerable populations, including partnering with civil society organizations and governments to deliver high-quality services free of stigma and discrimination.

Orphans and vulnerable children

To support orphans and vulnerable children who are affected by HIV and AIDS, we carry out a range of interventions to improve their health, nutrition, education and overall well-being.

Prevention

For decades, we have been at the cutting edge of developing, researching and introducing new HIV prevention methods. Today, we are advancing access to and uptake of new prevention methods at scale.

We integrate HIV services with other health services to provide clients the comprehensive care they need.

Our history in HIV programming

  • Pilot HIV prevention programs start

    1986

    FHI 360 initiated some of the earliest pilot HIV prevention programs in Cameroon, Ghana and Mali. Within a year, these pilots led to two major USAID awards for HIV programs (AIDSTECH and AIDSCOM), which built the foundation for the U.S. government’s response to HIV and AIDS in low- and middle- income countries.

  • AIDSCAP program begins

    1991

    FHI 360 was awarded funding for AIDSCAP, a collaborative program that mobilized communities and resources for HIV prevention and care programs in low- and middle-income countries. AIDSCAP also worked to create an enabling policy environment.

  • First HIV prevention clinical trials network launches

    1993

    FHI 360 served as the international lead for the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ first clinical trials network focused on HIV prevention, called HIVNET. Six years later, HIVNET’s research agenda was split across two new networks. One of these was the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), which FHI 360 continues to lead today. Through HIVNET and HPTN, FHI 360 has facilitated critical scientific breakthroughs in our understanding of how to prevent HIV.

  • IMPACT project strengthens local capacity

    1998

    USAID’s funding of the IMPACT project from 1998 through 2007 led to a rapid expansion of HIV prevention and the initiation of treatment and care services. IMPACT, which FHI 360 led, helped strengthen local capacity for the design and management of HIV programs and projects in more than 70 countries.

  • Antiretroviral therapy is provided in low-resource settings

    2001

    FHI 360 started providing antiretroviral therapy (ART) to people living with HIV. We initiated pilot projects in Ghana, Kenya and Rwanda to demonstrate that ART could be delivered in low-resource settings in Africa.

  • IMPAACT Network is launched

    2006

    The HPTN’s microbicides agenda was split into the Microbicides Trials Network (MTN), in which FHI played a key role, and the International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT) Network, in which FHI 360 also played a key role. Since 2013, FHI 360 has served as the full operations center for the IMPAACT Network.

  • Antiretroviral therapy reduces likelihood of HIV transmission

    2011

    The HPTN 052 study was named “Breakthrough of the Year” by Science magazine. The study was the first randomized clinical trial to show that providing early ART to a person with HIV can reduce the likelihood of sexual transmission of HIV to a partner without HIV by 96%.

  • First USAID project aimed at vulnerable populations launches

    2014

    With funding from PEPFAR and USAID, FHI 360 and partners launched the LINKAGES project, the first USAID initiative specifically designed to reduce HIV transmission among vulnerable populations and to improve their enrollment and retention in HIV care and treatment. LINKAGES worked with more than 200 local partners, reaching more than 2 million people with services and contributing to policy changes in more than 20 countries.

  • Next USAID project aimed at vulnerable populations launches

    2019

    FHI 360 began leading the eight-year Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project, funded by PEPFAR and USAID, to provide strategic technical assistance and direct service delivery to achieve HIV epidemic control and promote self-reliant management of national HIV, COVID-19 and global health security programs. EpiC has supported local partners and programming in over 65 countries. The project’s platform is also used by USAID to respond to global health security threats.

  • MOSAIC continues work to increase access to HIV prevention

    2021

    To help women protect themselves from HIV by accelerating introduction and scale-up of new biomedical prevention products, FHI 360 and partners launched Maximizing Options to Advance Informed Choice for HIV Prevention (MOSAIC), a five-year global project funded by PEPFAR and USAID. MOSAIC works on research and research translation, technical assistance, capacity strengthening, and meaningful engagement with young people in HIV prevention efforts.
