Project

U.S. Department of State Enhanced HIV Services for Epidemic Control (EHSEC)

Country

Dominican Republic

Duration

2022 - 2027

Funder

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) / U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)

In the Dominican Republic, FHI 360 leads the U.S. Department of State Enhanced HIV Services for Epidemic Control (EHSEC) project to break through remaining, persistent barriers to achieving HIV epidemic control and to promote self-reliant management of HIV projects. The project’s activities support the government of the Dominican Republic’s 95-95-95 strategy by filling gaps in HIV prevention, case finding and treatment.

Activities are also tailored to the local context and epidemiology so that they are maximally effective in strengthening and sustaining HIV services and systems for long-term epidemic control for Haitian migrants and their descendants. EHSEC works closely with eight local partners across five provinces and 16 antiretroviral therapy sites to deliver efficient, results-based technical assistance and direct health services.

The project’s technical approach leverages FHI 360’s 15 years’ experience leading HIV projects in the Dominican Republic as well as its deep understanding of the country’s context, operating environments, and interventions. It also builds on the HIV Services and System Strengthening project’s success and learning.

The project aims to increase coverage of quality, comprehensive and person-centered HIV prevention, diagnosis, care and treatment services and HIV/TB co-infection prevention and management by strengthening the technical and administrative capacities of local health systems. EHSEC also supports priority populations, including orphans and vulnerable children.
