Ethiopia

FHI 360 partners with the government of Ethiopia and civil society organizations to improve lives in sustainable ways by developing evidence-based programs and increasing the capacity of local institutions to address challenges.

We have been working in Ethiopia since 1993 and established an office in 2001. Our current programs focus on nutrition, HIV and AIDS, family planning, maternal and child health, livelihoods, strategic behavior change, capacity building, gender, and education.

Our HIV and AIDS work in Ethiopia began in 2001, when we focused on strengthening the national response at the community and health-facility levels by building the capacity of institutions to provide sustainable, integrated and high-quality services for people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. These programs used social and behavior change communication to reach people living with HIV and populations with a high likelihood of exposure to HIV.

Improving the quality of education in Ethiopia has also been an important priority. Since the mid-1990s, our experts have partnered with the Ministry of Education to expand access to and support quality and equity in education. Over the years, we have supported the expansion of active learning as an alternative to traditional rote memorization in schools — an approach that places students at the center of learning and that has helped to improve the quality of basic education across the country.

Across Ethiopia, FHI 360 continues to strengthen the ability of national and local institutions to address the nation’s most pressing development challenges and encourage positive, lasting change.
