March 2020 — This toolkit provides a step-by-step guide to understanding the literacy package and training materials developed by the Reading and Numeracy Activity (RANA) in northern Nigeria. It describes major features of RANA’s Pupil Books, Teacher Guides, and Numeracy Read Aloud Stories; an overview of supplementary materials, including posters and videos; the process for distributing these materials; and what evidence underscores the effectiveness of the literacy package. The toolkit also presents RANA’s training and coaching process. With this toolkit, stakeholders and education implementers can replicate the RANA project in their own context, beyond Nigeria.
RANA Learn: Community Mobilization and Reading Promotion
March 2020 — This report provides a summary of successful community mobilization strategies used in northwest Nigeria to promote greater reading achievement under the Reading and Numeracy Activity (RANA). It highlights four key strategies: reading festivals, school open days, adopt a school and community reading mobilizers. These strategies may be applicable to a wider group of project implementers and stakeholders in a variety of education contexts beyond northwest Nigeria.
RANA Learn: Haske Basic Education for Integrated Qur’anic Schools – Materials and Training Guide
March 2020 — In northern Nigeria, millions of children are not enrolled in formal schools, but most of these children attend Qur’anic Schools. To expand access to education for these learners, the Reading and Numeracy Activity (RANA) developed a program called Haske, designed for Integrated Qur’anic Schools. This toolkit key materials, such as the general structure of the program, the scope and sequence of learning, facilitator guides, learner materials, and training materials. This is an essential guidance tool for governments and nongovernmental organizations wishing to replicate the Haske program in Nigeria or other Hausa-speaking contexts. The toolkit also provides a compelling model for nonformal literacy initiatives beyond Nigeria.
