Communicating about Microbicides with Women in Mind (fact sheet)

2014 — The Communicating about Microbicides with Women in Mind project developed a two-page document highlighting the project’s major accomplishments, including details about the three project phases conducted in Kenya: 1) the landscape analysis, 2) the materials development and pretesting, and 3) the materials assessment and key results. This document also lists member organizations for the Project Advisory Committee.

Communicating about Microbicides with Women in Mind (flip charts)

2014 — The Communicating about Microbicides with Women in Mind project developed and assessed the effectiveness of in-depth, educational flip charts for the potential introduction of microbicide gel in Kenya. Three evidence-based flip charts were developed: 1) for use by organizations working with community members, including women, men and youth, 2) for use by organizations working with female sex workers and 3) for use by health care providers during microbicide counseling sessions.

Communicating about Microbicides with Women in Mind (posters)

2014 — The Communicating about Microbicides with Women in Mind project developed and assessed the effectiveness of awareness-raising posters for potential microbicide gel introduction in Kenya. The final set of evidence-based posters includes those for women in stable relationships, women in casual relationships, young women and female sex workers. Two versions of the posters have been created for each audience: one that positions microbicides primarily as an HIV prevention product and another that focuses on other benefits such as intimacy or pleasure.

Communicating about Microbicides with Women in Mind (wall charts)

2014 — The Communicating about Microbicides with Women in Mind project developed and assessed the effectiveness of wall charts for use by doctors and nurses. The wall charts include step-by-step instructions for health care providers to follow when counseling women and couples about microbicides. Two separate wall charts were designed: one specifically for use by providers in HIV testing and counseling (HTC) facilities and another for use by providers working in other health facilities, such as family planning clinics or youth-friendly clinics.

Communication Strategy and Adaptation Guide (and accompanying Annex)

August 2014 — This strategy document is the final report for the Communicating about Microbicides with Women in Mind project. This report and the accompanying annex were written with the following goals: 1) to document the important promise of vaginal microbicide gel as a new HIV prevention product for women, 2) to describe the project’s experience with materials development, 3) to provide a sample microbicide communication strategy for Kenya, and 4) to outline a process for updating and adapting the materials for use in other countries or with other new HIV prevention methods.
