There is a severe humanitarian crisis for an estimated 8.5 million people in northeast Nigeria, resulting from conflict in the region. Families and individuals are in critical need of food, water, sanitation, protection, education, shelter and health services.
FHI 360 is creating integrated solutions to meet these needs through the Integrated Humanitarian Assistance for Internally Displaced Persons in Dikwa Local Government Area, Borno State, Northeast Nigeria project (IHAP). The project, which is funded by the Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) in partnership with joint oil-sector partners led by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), is delivering multisector support, including community health outreach activities and a static primary health care facility; a fully functional safe space for victims and survivors of gender-based violence; and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions.
Activities include:
- Provision of health care through a static primary health care center, medical supplies, and staff training for primary health care and sexual and reproductive health services
- Training, supplies and supportive supervision to community health extension workers to ensure care at the household level and proper linkages and referrals at the community level
- Support for case management and psychosocial support services for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, through an IHAP-established safe space
- Rehabilitation or installation of essential WASH infrastructure that includes a handheld, solar-powered water pump; latrines; and bathing facilities
- Promotion of WASH interventions through the installation of waste points and clean-up campaigns to reduce environmental health risks
Activities are designed with a flexible response to meet the most urgent needs, linking relief to recovery.
