End Neglected Tropical Diseases in Africa and Asia

Countries

Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ghana, Laos, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sierra Leone, Viet Nam

Duration

2010 - 2018

Funder

United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

In September 2010, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded FHI 360 two five-year Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Cooperative Agreements, spanning both Africa and Asia. The awards enable FHI 360 and other organizations to support USAID’s goal to reduce the global prevalence of NTDs by 50% among 70% of the affected population, contributing to the elimination of several diseases, including:

  • Lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis)
  • Onchocerciasis (river blindness)
  • Schistosomiasis (snail fever)
  • Three soil-transmitted helminths (hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm)
  • Trachoma (blinding eye infection)

Program Activities

Building on the success of USAID’s original NTD control program, FHI 360 has launched the programs to End Neglected Tropical Diseases in Africa and Asia, or “END in Africa” and “END in Asia.” These programs will support ministries of health and other government entities in Africa and Asia as they scale up their local integrated NTD control activities.

FHI 360 seeks applicants that can support these local NTD control activities. Through an ongoing, transparent, and competitive selection process, END in Africa and END in Asia will issue Requests for Application (RFAs) or Annual Program Statements (APS) as new countries are incorporated into the scope of work and new funds become available.

Collaboration with Partners

FHI 360 will provide overall program and financial management, monitoring and evaluation, coordination, and quality control. Other partners will provide capacity building in financial management, drug forecasting and supply chain management, and knowledge management. FHI 360 will work closely with both USAID and national ministries of health to ensure successful rollout and implementation of all country-led activities.

FHI 360 and its partners have close relationships with governments and nongovernmental organizations in Asia and Africa, a wealth of experience developing global and country-level infrastructure, and the staff and systems to ensure a rapid start-up and a smooth expansion of effective preventive chemotherapy and support activities for NTDs. The FHI 360-led team’s strategic and technical approach will capitalize on each partner’s strengths and will emphasize country ownership, collaboration, transparency, accountability, and sustainability.
