The Government of Vietnam has committed to ending tuberculosis (TB) in that country by 2030. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Support to End Tuberculosis and the USAID Sustainable HIV and Tuberculosis Response from Technical Assistance (SHIFT) projects are working with the National Tuberculosis Program of Vietnam to support this goal, which is defined as reducing TB incidence by 90 percent, reducing TB mortality by 95 percent and lowering patient costs.
Since June 2020, the projects have used an innovative approach to tuberculosis detection called the Double X strategy, named for its use of X-ray machines and rapid diagnostic machines — called GeneXpert — and a two-location approach in health centers and mobile units.
