August 2017 — The development of new contraceptive technologies that better meet user needs and method-related concerns is crucial to improving family planning outcomes. This technical report summarizes results of a mixed methods study in Burkina Faso and Uganda to assess user preferences for six family planning methods currently under development or ready for introduction: an existing copper intrauterine device (IUD) (ready for introduction), an existing levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) (ready for introduction), a new single-rod implant, a biodegradable implant, a longer-acting injectable and a method of nonsurgical permanent contraception. The study included adding a set of questions to the nationally representative PMA2020 female surveys in the two countries and conducting qualitative interviews and focus groups with women, men, and family planning providers and key informants.
