January 2021 — This report is a follow-up to FHI 360’s 2013 baseline study of afterschool coordination programs, which includes environmental scans to identify respondents’ knowledge about U.S. city-level afterschool systems, survey design and collection, data cleaning and reporting. For the 2013 study, researchers conducted interviews or online surveys with representatives from 69 cities. The researchers generated descriptive statistics based on survey findings and conducted subanalyses by city size, coordination status, mayor or city manager commitment to afterschool coordination, and child poverty rate. The follow-up survey explores the adoption and sustainability of three key components: an entity to facilitate afterschool program coordination, a common data system on children’s participation, and a common set of quality standards or a framework. The Wallace Foundation funded both studies.
