February 2006 — One of the critical focus areas of the Action for West Africa Region-HIV/AIDS (AWARE-HIV/AIDS) project is identifying, disseminating and supporting the replication in West Africa of best-practice interventions that reduce the transmission of HIV and AIDS and ensure access to treatment. This collection covers behavior change communication, voluntary counseling and testing, reduction of sexually transmitted infections, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, care and treatment, advocacy for policy change and community financing models for combating HIV/AIDS.
The experiences outlined were drawn from 18 countries in the region that are served by the AWARE project. The publication describes selected promising and best practices that stand to stimulate the development of new and strengthened approaches to reducing prevalence rates and that add value to initiatives in progress.
