This success story highlights the PrEP champion strategy that EpiC Togo and Forces en Action pour le Mieux-être de la Mère de l’Enfant (FAMME) piloted to improve PrEP uptake among female sex workers in Togo. The initiative engages PrEP-using female sex workers as advocates to educate their peers on PrEP’s benefits and accessibility. Piloted in 2023, the strategy significantly boosted PrEP initiation among female sex workers. Challenges — such as transportation costs to clinics — highlighted the need for further support, potentially through community-based service models.
Following the pilot’s success, plans are underway to expand the PrEP champion approach to reach other members of key populations and other locations across Togo, reinforcing HIV prevention efforts through peer networks and incentivized support.
