December 2012 — Implemented in Kenya and South Africa, the study Assessing Physical Delivery of PrEP in Support of Proof of Deliverability yielded two briefs. The study was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and took place December 1, 2010, until December 31, 2012.
The study was designed to:
- Identify the most feasible and acceptable channels for delivery of antiretroviral (ARV)-based prevention products to populations at high risk of HIV infection
- Evaluate the impact on existing health services when delivering these products
- Identify the additional capacity required to support product introduction
A range of ARV-based HIV prevention technologies, including oral and injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and vaginal microbicides, was explored through interviews with stakeholders; focus groups with potential end users, including adolescent women, female sex workers and discordant couples; facility assessments and a stakeholder consultation meeting.
Study findings were introduced in an article published in the Journal of the International AIDS Society titled The Importance of Choice in the Rollout of ARV-Based Prevention to User Groups in Kenya and South Africa: A Qualitative Study.
