Our history is rooted in innovating cutting-edge programs in low- and middle-income countries that slowed down the HIV epidemic. FHI 360’s clinical trials helped set the international standards for HIV prevention research that were instrumental to the U.S. government (USG) global response to the epidemic.
FHI 360’s wide health portfolio includes leading large-scale prevention, care and treatment programs, and global health security work across Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. FHI 360 teams help countries prevent, detect and respond to infectious disease and pandemic threats — from powering disease surveillance to supporting national crisis responses to mpox and Ebola. Working alongside public and private partners, FHI 360 focuses on strengthening global, regional and national health systems, improving health outcomes, and building the capacity that countries and ecosystems need to contain future threats.

Introduction
For more than 50 years, we have delivered data-driven solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges. Here’s a snapshot of where we started. -
1971
We got our start at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill conducting research to help people make informed decisions about their health. -
1986
We expanded our scope through the development of groundbreaking research, prevention and treatment programs that addressed the HIV and AIDS epidemics. -
1990
We established the FHI Foundation to stimulate new ideas and incentivize innovations for the world’s increasingly interconnected challenges. The foundation was funded by proceeds from the sale of two for-profit companies. -
2011
FHI and the Academy for Educational Development (AED) came together to create FHI 360. Our capabilities grew to include nutrition, education, economic development, civil society and other areas — giving us the ability to connect people around the world to the resources and opportunities they need to shape their own futures. -
