DURHAM, N.C. – As of today, May 26, 2025, Joseph Figueira Martin — a respected global development consultant — has spent one full year in detention in the Central African Republic without a trial nor even a trial date set.
Joe traveled to the CAR on behalf of FHI 360 to help design a program aimed at reducing poverty, expanding economic opportunities, and preventing gender-based violence. Allegations reported in the media misrepresent the purpose of his work and stand in stark contrast to the humanitarian principles that guided his mission.
In the past year, Joe’s health has worsened, and his continued detention has caused deep pain for his family, colleagues and friends. Holding him without due process violates his basic rights and stands in direct opposition to international standards of justice.
We strongly urge all appropriate authorities to resolve this matter swiftly by either setting a fair and transparent trial date or releasing him immediately. We also urge the diplomatic community to continue prioritizing his case.
FHI 360 remains steadfast in our support for Joe and our belief in justice, dignity and the protection of humanitarian workers everywhere.
