Millions of people living in poverty often cannot afford to choose saving the environment tomorrow over meeting their basic needs today. A greener economy could create 213 million new jobs globally by 2030.
Today’s climate crisis is driven by fossil-fuel based economies that have damaged ecosystems and widened socioeconomic disparities, driving billions into poverty. Strengthening the emerging green economy and supporting green livelihoods are vital to addressing these challenges.
FHI 360 is championing green livelihoods by leveraging decades of experience in supporting sustainable livelihoods, financial inclusion, education, positive youth development and community engagement. We strengthen communities’ capacity to manage their own resources toward ecological and economic benefit for all.
Working with communities, local governments and the private sector, FHI 360 transforms local value chains to provide sustainable opportunities, particularly for marginalized populations. We do so by supporting inclusive livelihoods that promote climate-smart enterprise and green industries and by bridging the gap between education and training programming and green labor market needs. Areas of focus include:
- Supporting women, youth, rural and other marginalized populations to successfully launch, manage and grow sustainable green enterprises that preserve natural resources while meeting market demand.
- Assisting enterprises to strengthen market linkages, improve financial acumen, increase access to financial services, and bolster their organizational capacity to weather internal and external shocks.
- Helping communities benefit economically from protecting their natural resources through initiatives that build resilience to climate and economic shocks, support small and medium green enterprises, and assist businesses in adopting green technologies and carbon-neutral practices.
- Conducting labor market assessments with a green lens to help the private and public sectors pinpoint where to invest in workforce development to grow green jobs and industries.
- Ensuring that vulnerable populations benefit from an equitable transition into the green economy. This includes preparing youth to succeed in the green jobs market by infusing a climate-smart trades focus in our workforce development and entrepreneurship programming.
- Supporting smallholder farmers and fishers in adopting climate-smart practices that boost yields, ecosystem health and income and help to ensure food security.
