FHI 360 believes that an intentional, integrated approach to the design, delivery and evaluation of projects has the potential to make an enduring difference in people’s lives. Family planning has far-reaching impact on almost all of the Sustainable Development Goals. It can even transform entire countries while achieving a demographic dividend.
For many years, FHI 360 has been leading efforts to integrate family planning into other health services. Our research and projects support family planning and HIV integration and the integration of family planning and childhood immunizations.
In addition to the health sector, FHI 360 conducted research and developed resources to support the scale-up of programs integrating family planning with other development areas, including microfinance, agriculture and the environment. A report developed under our PROGRESS project provides guidance for on-the-ground efforts to integrate diverse development sectors.
Under the FANTA project, we synthesized lessons learned from the integration of family planning with nutrition and food security programs. FANTA conducted a formative research study to explore opportunities to integrate family planning into an existing food security program in Malawi, partnering with Project Concern International. Results will inform future programming decisions.
Under the Afya Uzazi project in Kenya, we are implementing and evaluating an intervention that encourages communities to simultaneously strengthen healthy behaviors, engage in environmentally sustainable practices and preserve natural resources.
Under the YouthPower Action project, FHI 360 works across sectors to support positive youth development. Ensuring access to sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning, is a central part of holistic cross-sectoral programming for youth. Several FHI 360 resources synthesize evidence and make recommendations for programs that seek to integrate health with other sectors and develop soft skills among youth.
