Since 2021, FHI 360 has worked with the government of Mauritania, local civil society organizations and religious groups to enhance young people’s leadership skills and increase their participation in civil society, as young Mauritanians face significant economic and social challenges, including poverty, unemployment and violent extremism.
To support young Mauritanians in promoting prosocial alternatives to violent extremism, FHI 360 is leading the Tamkeen project, which aims to develop enduring regional networks of community organizations and create a platform for young people to learn and strengthen their leadership and soft skills. Together with local civil society organizations, Tamkeen is developing the building blocks needed to strengthen young people’s agency and confidence. Through Tamkeen, we are centering Mauritanians’ voices and experiences to promote civic engagement, improve social cohesion and strengthen resilience.
