March 2023 — The Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition (MCHN) Activity is a five-year project, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, that seeks to improve maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and nutrition outcomes in Uganda. The project also supports improved delivery of MNCH and nutrition services for the urban poor in Kampala by strengthening service delivery systems in the public and private sectors. These documents, which include reports, webinar summaries, and presentations, offer knowledge and results generated from the Uganda MCHN Activity that can be used to improve the demand for and availability of quality-MNCH and nutrition services and highlight the importance of using data to strengthen services.
- Implementing the New Antenatal Care Model in Uganda: Ultrasound and Sonography: This report describes the objectives, methods and results of an assessment, carried out by the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition (MCHN) Activity, which sought to document the availability and human resource capacity of ultrasound and sonography in Uganda.
- MPDSR Community of Practice and National Data Use Approach: Experiences from Uganda: This presentation describes the work of a community of practice established for implementing the maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response intervention through the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition Activity, which works with the government of Uganda to improve maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition outcomes in Uganda.
- USAID/Uganda Nutrition Implementing Partners Learning Experience: Community-Integrated Nutrition in Karamoja: This document provides an overview of a two-day workshop on community-integrated nutrition held by the Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition Activity, the Uganda Learning Activity and U.S. Agency for International Development-supported partners NUYOK and APOLOU. The document describes the workshop’s activities, including field visits to intervention sites and learning-exchange sessions, and lists lessons from the field visits, implementation challenges, recommendations for NUYOK and APOLOU, and best practices and core strategies.

In the webinar, “How Can We Improve Health Care for the Urban Poor in Uganda? What More Needs To Be Done to Save Mothers and Their Babies? Lessons Learned from Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Projects in Kampala City,” public health experts and advocates shared evidence and learnings to inform the development of appropriate policies, strategies and programs to improve health outcomes for the urban poor in Kampala and other cities in Uganda.
