The Research for Scalable Solutions (R4S) project conducts implementation science research to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and equity of family planning programs in Africa and Asia. R4S staff work with various country research agencies to strengthen research capacity, support countries in their journey to self-reliance and generate evidence for developing feasible, sustainable strategies to implement High Impact Practices and self-care interventions equitably and at scale. FHI 360 provides strategic vision, technical leadership, oversight and financial management of the project.
The project is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Our technical partners are Evidence for Sustainable Human Development Systems in Africa, Makerere University School of Public Health in Uganda, Population Services International and Save the Children.
R4S will work toward the following results:
- Expand development, adoption and implementation at scale of self-care and client-driven approaches in the public and private sectors by:
- Expanding access to voluntary family planning using direct-to-consumer and self-care approaches
- Expanding distribution of contraceptives and fertility awareness information through non-clinic-based channels, such as drug shops and pharmacies, and through integrated platforms within and outside of the health sector
- Developing metrics for measuring self-care approaches and promoting their use at the global and country level
- Improve understanding of cost-effectiveness and efficiency of scaling proven and promising High Impact Practices and expanding method choice by:
- Building the evidence base on incremental costs of scaling up High Impact Practices
- Supporting governments and partners in conducting their own budget impact analyses
- Producing, identifying and promoting evidence-based strategies to expand method choice
- Increase understanding of how proven and promising High Impact Practices enhance equitable access to high-quality voluntary family planning by:
- Supporting national stakeholders to improve measurement of equity
- Testing approaches to increase delivery of High Impact Practices to disadvantaged populations, such as adolescents and the rural poor
- Strengthening the capacity of local partners to design, implement, and monitor and evaluate the equity of service delivery programming
