FHI 360 helps farmers and small-scale traders in agriculture, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, use applied information and communications technology to improve decision making. The result is improved productivity and greater competitiveness of agricultural value chains and better lives for farmers and their communities.
With 85% of sub-Saharan Africa’s population engaged in agriculture that is primarily rainfed or focused on subsistence, enhancing farmers’ decision-making capacity can have a great impact on human development. FHI 360 uses mobile and wireless technology to share climatic data that helps farmers and those raising livestock adapt to the impact of climate change on water supply.
Briefing papers
We have issued practical briefing papers on how information and communication technologies are being used throughout the agricultural process. In East Africa, our programs have looked at how to make pricing and other important information readily accessible to those who need it. Greater access to this type of information benefits producers, formal traders and rural traders.
Organizations assisting farmers
FHI 360 works with organizations that assist farmers. Our toolkits and workshops help these organizations use interactive radio and low-cost video to educate farmers on how to increase productivity and, ultimately, earnings.
