Online Professional English Network (OPEN)

Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs
2015 - 2019

The Online Professional English Network (OPEN), funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, improves English-language skills acquisition by teachers around the world and fosters cultural understanding between American citizens and those of other countries.

The program provides the most current, evidence-based approaches in the discipline of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) to the non-native English-speaking teacher community through direct access to U.S. higher education institutions and education experts. At least 1,800 teachers will be provided with the opportunity to participate in global online and regional on-demand courses developed through partnerships with U.S. higher education institutions. In addition, FHI 360 partners with internationally recognized education experts to provide country-specific courses for program participants.

FHI 360 makes the resources it creates through this program available on an open-source content management system, which enables the program to provide free, accessible online learning experiences for an almost unlimited number of non-native English-speaking teachers and other learners.

This program furthers FHI 360’s commitment to working with international educators and university partners to promote English-language skills acquisition and online programming.
