2012 — Research suggests that male engagement can improve access to and use of family planning. Yet in South Asia, many cultural factors still limit men’s involvement in family planning. This brief reviews these barriers and provides evidence-based guidance for increasing male engagement in South Asia. Global evidence suggests that group education, community outreach and clinic-based interventions can effectively change men’s behavior and gender-related attitudes about family planning. Examples from Bangladesh, India and Nepal show how successful family planning programs have incorporated these approaches.
