The authors reviewed the evidence on the association between contraceptive use and sexually transmitted infections and bacterial vaginosis published over the last 10 years. Few data are available from prospective studies. But, new evidence suggests a significantly increased risk of herpes simplex virus type 2 infection among depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) users. DMPA users should be counseled on this possible increased risk, and new research is warranted to better understand the association.
