Durham, N.C., USA — The board of directors of FHI 360 has elected new members Sheila Leatherman, a professor of global health policy at University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health and an advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO), and Carlos Torres, a senior international development consultant, effective November 9, 2021.
“We’re excited to welcome Sheila and Carlos, who will bring diverse expertise and insight to our work,” said Tessie San Martin, chief executive officer of FHI 360. “At FHI 360, we work with a 360-degree approach to human development — striving to capitalize on the expertise of our local partners while putting the aspirations and needs of people first. Their deep experience driving transformative change globally will give us valuable insight.”
Leatherman has worked with over 50 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America, building expertise in health care management, public health and health policy, with a particular focus on quality of care, performance improvement in the health sector, health systems reforms and humanitarian health. As a lead advisor to the WHO since 2015, she develops the academic and technical foundations for WHO support of member states in the development of national health care quality agendas to improve health care services and outcomes around the world.
Torres has more than 40 years of experience in the international development sector, primarily in Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and the former Soviet Union. His areas of expertise include international business development, trade and investment promotion, and microbanking. He was named regional director of the U.S. Peace Corps’ Inter-America and the Pacific region in 2010 and subsequently held several leadership roles, culminating in his service as deputy director — the agency’s No. 2 position — from 2015 to 2017.
