GlaxoSmithKline recognized for Community-Based Malaria Program

May 17, 2013

FHI 360 congratulates GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) on winning a GBCHealth Business Action on Health Award for their Community-Based Malaria Program in Ghana. GSK received the award in the category of Community Investment: Special Focus on AIDS, Tuberculosis or Malaria. The awards recognize the world’s best corporate-supported programs that address global health needs. Winning companies will be recognized at the GBCHealth Annual Conference on May 17th in New York City.

FHI 360 is proud to partner with GSK on the Community-Based Malaria Program, which mobilizes communities in two districts in Ghana to improve malaria prevention, early identification and treatment. The program trains community health workers, supplies bed nets, and works with community-based groups and Licensed Chemical Sellers (LCSs), who provide medicines and are often the first point of contact for people in rural communities.

The program has met with significant success, as evidenced by an increase in health-seeking behavior among the residents in the two districts. The Pru and Sene districts experienced an increase in hospital attendance of up to 27 percent. In both districts, the availability of malaria treatment drugs increased from 39.1 percent to over 90 percent among trained LCSs. Through the program’s capacity-building activities, 130 community health workers received refresher health trainings. Additionally, data that was previously unavailable is now captured and utilized to inform future national health system interventions.
