Fighting Gender Discrimination and Sexual Harassment in Afghan Universities (audio)

June 16, 2017 —

The history of gender discrimination and sexual harassment in Afghanistan is long and complex. In this conversation, Andrea Bertone, Director of FHI 360’s Gender Department, and Maryce Ramsey, Senior Gender Advisor, discuss the current environment for women and girls in Afghanistan, particularly in higher education. They talk about some of the drivers and enablers of discrimination and harassment, as well as the barriers to addressing these factors.

They also examine the ways in which our University Support and Workforce Development Program is working in partnership with the Ministry of Education to combat those drivers. We supported the ministry in developing a nondiscrimination, anti-sexual-harassment policy, and we are now helping to build the structure and prepare personnel to implement this policy, laying the foundation for sustained prevention and support.
