FHI 360 celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child
The theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child is innovating for education. While it is clear that educating girls can transform societies for the better, many girls continue to grow up without access to a high-quality education. For decades, FHI 360 has worked with partners in the United States and around the world to develop and implement new solutions that help girls overcome barriers to education. Our research and programs in areas like basic literacy and numeracy, leadership and mentoring, and scholarships have moved girls forward in the classroom — and beyond.

On behalf of the U.S. Agency for International Development, FHI 360 manages the global dissemination of information about youth sexual and reproductive health research, programs and materials published by the Interagency Youth Working Group (IYWG). FHI 360 develops the content of the IYWG website and blog, Half the World; produces a bimonthly electronic synthesis of new youth-related research and resources, Youth InfoNet; writes a series of research briefs, YouthLens; and hosts technical meetings, e-forums and consultations. In addition, FHI 360 develops tools and resources on youth sexual and reproductive health to support evidence-based programs. The IYWG blog has addressed topics such as the future of girls’ education and reducing gender inequality by improving girls’ ability to manage their menstrual hygiene at school.
The Empowering Adolescent Girls to Lead through Education (EAGLE) project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo seeks to challenge and address the gender issues that keep girls out of school. In addition to providing scholarships and cash transfers to about 3,000 students, most of whom are girls, the project will implement a series of multidisciplinary activities focused on education, health and gender-based violence.
In Kenya and Nigeria, the Four Pillars PLUS project improves the quality and relevance of education in primary school, especially for girls, through: mentoring for girls, scholarships for girls and boys, professional development and gender sensitivity training for teachers, and community participation in education.
Based on the Four Pillars PLUS methodology, the Improving Girls’ Secondary Education and Employment Opportunities project assists girls in seven secondary schools in Tanzania. The project helps girls bridge the gap between secondary school and employment through a robust internship program.
The Education de Base Project in Senegal has strengthened middle school education by providing access to information and communication technologies to improve teaching and learning.
A new report, Demand-Side Barriers to Girls' Secondary Education in Madhya Pradesh, India, examines the findings of FHI 360’s Madhya Pradesh Girls’ Secondary Education Study. The multi-district study, funded by the U.K. Department for International Development (DFID), assessed the demand- and supply-side factors that impede access to secondary education for socially disadvantaged girls in Madhya Pradesh.
