Durham, N.C., USA — Dr. Debrework Zewdie, who served as director of the World Bank Global AIDS Program and deputy executive director and chief operating officer of the Global Fund, and Scott Wu, executive director of the California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank, have been elected to the board of directors of FHI 360.
“I’m proud to welcome Debrework and Scott, two esteemed professionals whose knowledge and experience command global recognition,” says Tessie San Martin, chief executive officer of FHI 360 and a member of the organization’s board of directors. “Our two new board members boast expertise in the critical fields of health and finance, and they share our commitment to the rigorous application of data to development challenges.”
Zewdie has dedicated the past 40 years to international development work, with a particular focus on mitigating the cross-sectoral impact of the HIV epidemic on development. She spent more than two decades managing development programs ranging from national-level programs in her native Ethiopia to international bodies that include the World Bank, where she led the global HIV/AIDS program, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. An advocate for women’s health, she was a founding vice president and member of the Society for Women and AIDS in Africa (SWAA).
Wu is executive director of the California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank (IBank). He was a partner and head of investments for the Omidyar Network, a global pioneer in impact investing. Earlier in his career, he was a member of the founding team at Upstart Holdings, an online lending marketplace, and a co-founder of several innovative investment firms, including FTV Capital. In 2013 he was selected to serve as a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow, spending two years as an advisor to the U.S. Agency for International Development.
