  Exploring intersections of localised gender norms and unanticipated effects of a sexual and reproductive health intervention: Implications of respect and being a "good girl" in Zambezia Province, Mozambique

  The authors conducted a longitudinal, qualitative evaluation of girls ages 13 to 17 in Mozambique who had participated in a combined economic strengthening and sexual and reproductive health intervention. Thematic analysis found that intervention participants and other household and community members idealize girls who appear to be submissive, subservient and sexually chaste. Respondents believed the intervention reinforced these behaviors, although they were not generally aligned with the formal intervention content and were sometimes contrary to the intervention’s goals.

  Measuring changes in women's empowerment and its relationship to intimate partner violence

  Prior analyses suggest that women’s empowerment may be associated with an increase in intimate partner violence. This article discusses the methodological limitations posed by shifting empowerment and its social meanings within and across settings. It finds that, as women’s empowerment becomes more common, the association reverses. The authors suggest that interventions that increase women’s empowerment should include working with men and community groups to view empowered women as normal and to mitigate intimate partner violence.

  The impact of an alcohol harm reduction intervention on interpersonal violence and engagement in sex work among female sex workers in Mombasa, Kenya: Results from a randomized controlled trial

  A randomized controlled trial evaluated whether an alcohol harm reduction intervention was associated with reduced interpersonal violence or engagement in sex work among female sex workers in Mombasa, Kenya. Findings suggest that those assigned to the alcohol intervention were associated with reductions in some forms of violence and with reductions in engagement in sex work immediately and at six months post-intervention.
