    Economic benefits of savings groups in rural Mozambique

    Savings groups are a popular way to increase the economic well-being of vulnerable families because they are relatively easy and inexpensive, yet their limitations are not well understood. This paper examines the impact of a savings group program in rural Mozambique. Results show that participating in the group had a positive impact on income and asset ownership and participants could partially bridge seasonal gaps and meet needs to a greater extent during a crisis.

    Safety and efficacy of the PrePex male circumcision device: Results from pilot implementation studies in Mozambique, South Africa, and Zambia

    Devices have the potential to accelerate voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) programs by making the procedure easier, quicker and more widely accessible. This noncomparative prospective study found that the PrePex device was safe and effective among adult men (and a small group of adolescents) seeking VMMC in Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia. Based on these and other results, scale-up of PrePex services within VMMC programs is underway.

    The triple threat of pregnancy, HIV infection and malaria: Reported causes of maternal mortality in two nationwide health facility assessments in Mozambique, 2007 and 2012

    In health facilities with childbirth services, maternal mortality due to direct obstetric causes appears to have declined significantly between 2007 and 2012. Despite an increased availability of antiretrovirals and antimalarials, especially at the lower levels of health care, HIV, malaria and anemia continue to exact a heavy toll on child-bearing women. Efforts to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths must maximize the use of antenatal care that includes integrated preventive and treatment options for HIV infection, malaria and anemia.

    Stigma and discrimination: The experiences of HIV-positive women in poor neighborhoods of Maputo, Mozambique

    The AIDS epidemic is a serious public health problem in Mozambique. This socio-anthropological study analyzed the experiences of HIV-positive women in poor neighborhoods of Maputo. The results showed how gender inequalities increase women's vulnerability to HIV and contribute to their stigmatization and discrimination. Public policies should focus on women's empowerment and the reduction of HIV/AIDS-related stigma.

    Can village savings and loan groups be a potential tool in the malnutrition fight? Mixed method findings from Mozambique

    The findings of this study underscore the potential of economic-strengthening activities, such as village savings and loan groups, for improving seasonal and transitory food security. But, findings also highlight the need for additional supporting interventions to overcome chronic nutritional challenges.
