    Leveraging the private sector for child health: A qualitative examination of caregiver and provider perspectives on private sector care for childhood pneumonia in Uttar Pradesh, India

    This study explores the knowledge and past experiences that private-sector providers and child caregivers have with pneumonia diagnosis and treatment. The authors found that convenience, cost and expectations of rapid symptomatic improvement may encourage overuse of antibiotics, consultation with multiple providers and treatment interruptions. They suggest that addressing caregiver knowledge gaps and incentivizing recommended care standards may improve treatment outcomes.

    This chapter examines two initiatives that focused on improving youth outcomes in government-run secondary schools: the Mindset Teach program in South Africa and the Skishana Foundation in India. These programs highlight the importance of the development of high-quality instruction, learning standards, content and professional development, and the role these educational components play in nurturing the skills that youth need to be well-prepared citizens.

    Comparison of sexual risk, HIV/STI prevalence and intervention exposure among men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) and men who have sex with men only (MSMO) in India: Implications for HIV prevention

    The research examined HIV-related sexual risk, HIV and sexually transmitted infection prevalence and intervention exposures between men who have sex with men and women and men who have sex with men only. The findings indicate that concurrent sexual partnerships with men and women pose a risk of HIV transmission or acquisition for men who have sex with men and their male and female partners. All subgroups of this key population require tailored information and skills to consistently use condoms with different types of partners of either gender.

    Implementation of a confidential helpline for men having sex with men in India

    Facing significant stigma and discrimination, men who have sex with men in India often remain hidden and do not seek needed services. The dedicated helpline received over 100,000 calls in nine months and delivered counseling on HIV and sexually transmitted infection prevention and treatment, and psychosocial issues. This intervention could be a useful national strategy for reaching hard-to-reach men who have sex with men in India.
