    Outcomes of compulsory detention compared to community-based voluntary methadone maintenance treatment in Vietnam

    This research finds conclusive evidence that methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) is more costeffective than center-based compulsory treatment (CCT) in reducing heroin use, blood-borne virus risk behaviors, drug-related illegal behaviors and monthly drug spending. The authors recommend that policymakers consider allocation of resources for MMT treatment a higher priority and scale down CCT models.

    The political and scientific challenges in evaluating compulsory drug treatment centers in Southeast Asia

    This paper discusses the political challenges and methodological issues when conducting cost-effective research around compulsory drug treatment in a nondemocratic country in Southeast Asia. Local empirical evidence on the comparative cost-effectiveness of center-based compulsory drug treatment and methadone maintenance treatment is critical in considering more holistic, humane and effective drug-dependence treatment approaches.

    Gaps between breastfeeding awareness and practices in Vietnamese mothers result from inadequate support in health facilities and social norms

    Two approaches to reducing the gap between breastfeeding awareness and practice are strengthening support in health facilities and making desired practices normative. Increased early initiation of breastfeeding can be achieved through strengthening support by health staff, minimizing unnecessary Cesarean deliveries and ensuring infant-friendly health facilities. Programs can improve exclusive breastfeeding practices by addressing the sociocultural environment through counseling and support, mass media campaigns and highlighting of the negative effect of infant formula advertisements.
