    This review shows that noncommunicable diseases, their risk factors and unhealthy lifestyles are emerging problems in Vietnam. The authors suggest that although policies for prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases were available, their implementation needs to be combined with strengthened law enforcement and increased program coverage.

    Estimates of the quality of complementary feeding among Vietnamese infants aged 6-23 months varied by how commercial baby cereals were classified in 24-h recalls

    As a part of the World Health Organization (WHO) questionnaire capturing dietary information for a 24- hour period of children ages 6 to 23 months, the authors identified different scenarios to classify commercial baby cereals. The scenarios affected the population-level estimates of dietary quality. Guidance is required from WHO about how to account for the consumption of these cereals when estimating the quality of complementary feeding.

    Infant formula feeding at birth is common and inversely associated with subsequent breastfeeding behavior in Vietnam

    This study is among the first to investigate the effect of early introduction of infant formula on subsequent feeding practices with a large sample size and innovative approaches. Findings suggest that in Vietnam, infant formula feeding during the first three days after birth was associated with increased subsequent infant formula feeding and the early cessation of breastfeeding. This underscores the need to make early, exclusive breastfeeding normative and to create environments that support it.

    Impacts on breastfeeding practices of at-scale strategies that combine intensive interpersonal counseling, mass media, and community mobilization: Results of cluster-randomized program evaluations in Bangladesh and Vietnam

    This study evaluated the population-level impact of interpersonal counseling, mass media, community mobilization and policy advocacy on breastfeeding practices in Bangladesh and Vietnam. The authors found that breastfeeding practices can be improved on a large scale with intensive interventions, sustained for over five years, in diverse settings. A combination of interventions was more effective than a single intervention.

    Supply- and demand-side factors influencing utilization of infant and young child feeding counselling services in Viet Nam

    Adequate utilization of services is critical to maximize the impact of counseling on infant and young child feeding. The research findings indicate that demand-generation strategies are essential to increase utilization of facility-based counseling services in Vietnam and may be relevant for increasing and sustaining the use of nutrition services in similar contexts.

    Maternal willingness to pay for infant and young child nutrition counseling services in Vietnam

    Little is known about willingness to pay for preventive nutrition counseling services in Vietnam. The research findings indicate that a high demand for nutrition counseling and a willingness to pay would potentially finance a mechanism to cover costs of sustaining delivery of good-quality nutrition counseling services.

    Acceptability of two ready-to-use therapeutic foods by HIV-positive patients in Vietnam

    Ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) has been found effective in the treatment of severe acute malnutrition and low-cost, locally produced RUTF alternatives are sought. This study found that the acceptability of locally produced RUTF was greater than that of imported RUTF in HIV-positive adults and children in Vietnam.
