    Evaluation of a male engagement intervention to transform gender norms and improve family planning and HIV service uptake in Kabale, Uganda

    Evaluating men’s understanding of family planning and gender norms in Uganda revealed that, overall, the intervention did not achieve programmatically meaningful changes in gender attitudes among men, but it did show some improvements in men’s health-seeking behaviors. The authors suggest that future interventions require higher peer educator qualifications, longer intervention duration and more frequent supervision.

    Integrating family planning and HIV services at the community level: Formative assessment with village health teams in Uganda

    This study from Uganda found that community health workers who offer injectable family planning can deliver HIV testing and counseling without compromising service quality and that the integrated model is beneficial and acceptable to both community health workers and their clients.

    Qualitative assessment of the application of a discrete choice experiment with community health workers in Uganda: Aligning incentives with preferences

    Discrete choice experiments are used to design incentive packages for health workers. This study used qualitative research methods to examine the appropriateness and validity of a discrete choice experiment with community health workers who have lower literacy. The results indicate that this approach can be appropriate for community health workers but requires careful design and implementation.

    Expanding HIV testing and counselling into communities: Feasibility, acceptability, and effects of an integrated family planning/HTC service delivery model by village health teams in Uganda

    This experience from Uganda extends evidence on the use of lay health workers in HIV testing and counseling (HTC) through an integrated family planning/HTC model with community health workers. Findings indicate that integrating HTC into pre-existing family planning services is feasible and acceptable and potentially fills a gap in HTC service provision, including more frequent testing.

    Reasons for missing antiretroviral therapy: Results from a multi-country study in Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia

    This analysis identified the reasons patients missed doses of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and explored the association between symptoms and incomplete adherence. Common reasons for missing ART were symptoms, food insecurity and forgetfulness. Integrating text messages and food supplementation into programming is likely to improve adherence and patient outcomes.

    Incomplete adherence among treatment-experienced adults on antiretroviral therapy in Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia

    This study shows that at least 48 consecutive hours of missed antiretroviral therapy (ART) is most strongly related to virological failure. Researchers recommend greater attention to neglected individual approaches within health and ART program service delivery, such as involving social science trained counselors.

    On the road again: Concurrency and condom use among Uganda truck drivers

    Analyses of data collected from Ugandan truck drivers showed that overlapping sexual relationships with two or more long-term partners, with whom condoms were not being used, was common. These findings are of particular concern because this population is sometimes considered a key bridging population in the HIV epidemic. Innovative intervention programs that address the realities of truck drivers' lifestyles are needed for these men and their partners.
