    FHI 360 welcomes the World Health Organization’s updated guidance on contraceptive use by women at high risk of acquiring HIV infection and applauds the thoughtful, thorough review process that led to these new recommendations.

    HIV incidence among women using intramuscular depot medroxyprogesterone acetate, a copper intrauterine device, or a levonorgestrel implant for contraception: A randomised, multicentre, open-label trial

    The ECHO trial, a randomized clinical trial, was developed to address a long-standing question about the possible association of hormonal contraceptives with increased HIV acquisition risk. This article presents the data from research sites in Eswatini, Kenya, South Africa and Zambia. The results indicate there were no substantial differences in HIV incidence associated with use of three licensed contraceptive methods and supports continued and expanded access to these methods.

    Expanding access to a new, more affordable levonorgestrel intrauterine system in Kenya: Service delivery costs compared with other contraceptive methods and perspectives of key opinion leaders

    The levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is one of the most effective forms of contraception. In this study, the authors calculated the direct service delivery costs per couple-years of protection of various family planning methods and interviewed key opinion leaders. The costs of a new LNG-IUS compares favorably with other contraceptive methods common in Kenya. These results indicate that introducing a new, more affordable LNG-IUS product could help expand choice for women in Kenya and increase use of long-acting reversible contraception.

    Unexpected complications following adult medical male circumcision using the PrePex device

    The authors observed several unexpected complications in this implementation study of the PrePex device for medical male circumcision in western Kenya, including some that have not been reported in other PrePex studies. The potential for these complications should be incorporated into PrePex training programs to alert circumcision providers to these rare events and the appropriate treatments.
