    Insights from a text messaging-based sexual and reproductive health information program in Tanzania (m4RH): Retrospective analysis

    This study aimed to better understand how users engaged with a mobile health program in Tanzania from 2013 to 2016. Using system-generated data, the analysis shows a useful framework to measure user engagement. The data also provides information on how users engage with text messaging-based health interventions and how user interaction data could inform effective improvements to the intervention.

    Brief participant-centered convergence interviews integrate self-reports, product returns, and pharmacokinetic results to improve adherence measurement in MTN-017

    Studies of HIV prevention products face challenges with adherence and adherence reporting. This paper presents the convergence interviews that were developed and implemented during the Microbicide Trials Network (MTN) 017 study. The authors demonstrated that brief convergence interviews and pharmacokinetic data convergence interviews were feasible in adherence counseling sessions and, in general, participants would clarify with the counselors any discrepancies between adherence measures.

    Economic benefits of savings groups in rural Mozambique

    Savings groups are a popular way to increase the economic well-being of vulnerable families because they are relatively easy and inexpensive, yet their limitations are not well understood. This paper examines the impact of a savings group program in rural Mozambique. Results show that participating in the group had a positive impact on income and asset ownership and participants could partially bridge seasonal gaps and meet needs to a greater extent during a crisis.

    Electronic health, telemedicine and new paradigms for training and care

    This qualitative literature review assesses eHealth and mHealth training methods for HIV care that were published between 2016 and 2017. Notable findings were that the merging of electronic medical records systems improved telemedicine through mobile networks and instant messaging services to low-resource areas, and that few trials established efficient strategies to train HIV care providers or extenders on HIV care outcomes. The authors recommend more rigorous testing of electronic training interventions to demonstrate the impact on services for people living with HIV.

    Beyond the page: A process review of using ethnodrama to disseminate research findings

    Typical research dissemination strategies are often limited in terms of their reach, accessibility and level of audience engagement. This paper details the process of developing and implementing an ethnodrama, a written or live performance of the findings, to disseminate research findings. The paper drew on a study from Durham, North Carolina, that explored the health-seeking behaviors of African-American men.

    Evidence-based adaptation and scale-up of a mobile phone health information service

    Using mobile phone interventions for health improvement, particularly behavior change and maintenance interventions, is growing at a rapid pace. This case study presents how to apply best practices to successfully scale up mobile phone interventions. Applying principles of scale can inform the successful scale-up, sustainability and potential impact of mHealth programs across health topics and settings.

    Impacts on breastfeeding practices of at-scale strategies that combine intensive interpersonal counseling, mass media, and community mobilization: Results of cluster-randomized program evaluations in Bangladesh and Vietnam

    This study evaluated the population-level impact of interpersonal counseling, mass media, community mobilization and policy advocacy on breastfeeding practices in Bangladesh and Vietnam. The authors found that breastfeeding practices can be improved on a large scale with intensive interventions, sustained for over five years, in diverse settings. A combination of interventions was more effective than a single intervention.

    Sustainable cost models for mHealth at scale: Modeling program data from m4RH Tanzania

    Within the literature on the use of mobile phones to improve health outcomes, there is limited documentation of the cost of implementing mHealth solutions, making it difficult for program planners and policymakers to make informed decisions. The authors used one year's operational budget of an mHealth program and developed four different cost-recovery strategies for achieving financial sustainability.
