    Optimizing HIV prevention for women: A review of evidence from microbicide studies and considerations for gender-sensitive microbicide introduction

    Gender-related norms and inequalities that place women and girls at risk of acquiring HIV are also likely to affect their ability to use microbicides. Published vaginal microbicide studies were reviewed to identify gender-related factors that are likely to affect microbicide acceptability, access and adherence. This paper makes recommendations on product design, trial implementation, positioning, marketing and delivery of microbicides in a way that takes into account the gender-related norms and inequalities identified in the review.

    Improving adherence to antiretroviral therapy with triggered real-time text message reminders: The China Adherence through Technology Study

    The China Adherence through Technology Study tested an intervention to increase adherence among HIV-positive patients in China using real-time feedback through text-message reminders and counseling. Real-time reminders significantly improved antiretroviral adherence. This approach appears promising for managing HIV and other chronic diseases and warrants further investigation and adaptation in other settings.

    Sexual networks and HIV risk among black men who have sex with men in six U.S. cities

    Analysis of self-reported data from 1,349 black men who have sex with men in the United States, a group that is disproportionately affected by HIV, found that the men's sexual networks were relatively small and often overlapped with their social networks. Network interventions that engage the social networks of black men who have sex with men, such as peer influence, should be developed to affect social norms around HIV testing and HIV status disclosure.

    On the road again: Concurrency and condom use among Uganda truck drivers

    Analyses of data collected from Ugandan truck drivers showed that overlapping sexual relationships with two or more long-term partners, with whom condoms were not being used, was common. These findings are of particular concern because this population is sometimes considered a key bridging population in the HIV epidemic. Innovative intervention programs that address the realities of truck drivers' lifestyles are needed for these men and their partners.

    Intimacy versus isolation: A qualitative study of sexual practices among sexually active HIV-infected patients in HIV care in Brazil, Thailand and Zambia

    Understanding the psychosocial context of condomless sex among people living with HIV or AIDS could shed light on effective intervention strategies. The study considers the perceived impact of HIV on the sexual practices and relationships of in-care HIV-infected men who have sex with men, heterosexual men and women in Brazil, Thailand and Zambia who engaged in high-risk sexual practices.

    A randomized controlled trial of a brief intervention to reduce alcohol use among female sex workers in Mombasa, Kenya

    Interventions to reduce alcohol use are essential for targeting the nexus of alcohol, sex and HIV common among sex workers. This study is one of the first to demonstrate that providing a brief intervention can lead to significant reductions in alcohol use among a community-based, nontreatment-seeking sample of individuals. Results provide a framework for integrating a brief alcohol-reduction intervention into programs.
