    Factors related to incomplete adherence to antiretroviral therapy among adolescents attending three HIV clinics in the Copperbelt, Zambia

    The authors assessed antiretroviral adherence among adolescents in Ndola, Zambia, using two measures: 48-hour treatment gap in prior three months and pharmacy medication possession ratio in prior six months. The findings support strengthening adolescents’ HIV management skills related to alcohol use, family engagement and the challenges adolescents face when transitioning to adulthood, especially when they are no longer in school.

    Recruitment of underrepresented minority researchers into HIV prevention research: The HIV Prevention Trials Network Scholars program

    The HIV Prevention Trials Network’s (HPTN’s) Scholars Program encourages early-career, under-represented minority investigators to pursue and continue research in HIV prevention science. This paper describes the program and suggests that scientists from racial, ethnic and sexual minority communities can benefit from training and mentoring within research consortia, whereas the network research benefits from perspectives of underrepresented minority scientists.

    It’s all in the timing: Acceptability of a financial incentive intervention for linkage to HIV care in the HPTN 065 (TLC-Plus) study

    This qualitative research was conducted with participants and implementers of a financial incentive intervention to link newly diagnosed HIV-infected patients into HIV care. The authors state that patients and providers found the financial incentives to be favorable overall, but implementation challenges suggest that future similar interventions for linkage-to-care should consider optimal timing and presentation of financial incentives, how to overcome negative attitudes toward incentives and how to integrate incentives into existing linkage programs.

    A review on tuberculosis in human immunodeficiency virus infection

    Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common opportunistic infection and the leading cause of death among people living with HIV and AIDS. The paper reviews the activating effects of TB in HIV infection. The authors found that both the immunologic and virologic evidence show that patients’ immune responses to TB enhance HIV replication and might also enhance progression of HIV infection.

But, they noted a lack of evidence on technology to track and improve services across the entire cascade. This review highlights lessons learned from a range of technical solutions for HIV services. The paper will inform successful real-time program monitoring.
