    Cluster randomized stepped-wedge trial of a multi-level HIV prevention intervention to decrease amphetamine-type stimulants and sexual risk in Cambodian female entertainment and sex workers

    The authors examined the impact of combined interventions in Cambodian female entertainment and sex workers. The research indicates that the sequentially delivered interventions of a conditional cash transfer, a cognitive-behavioral education session and a small loan help Cambodian female sex workers reduce their risk of HIV infection, stop using drugs and improve their economic status. Feasibility studies are needed to inform the scale-up and improve durability of this comprehensive approach.

    PrEP Communications Accelerator: A digital demand creation tool for sub-Saharan Africa

    This paper outlines the methodology of developing the PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) Communications Accelerator, a digital tool that provides communication strategies, market research and recommendations for generating demand for PrEP across sub-Saharan Africa. The authors review the custom-built plans generated by the tool, including suggested media channels and communication tactics based on available evidence about the population and setting.

    Factors related to incomplete adherence to antiretroviral therapy among adolescents attending three HIV clinics in the Copperbelt, Zambia

    The authors assessed antiretroviral adherence among adolescents in Ndola, Zambia, using two measures: 48-hour treatment gap in prior three months and pharmacy medication possession ratio in prior six months. The findings support strengthening adolescents’ HIV management skills related to alcohol use, family engagement and the challenges adolescents face when transitioning to adulthood, especially when they are no longer in school.

    High prevalence of HIV drug resistance among newly diagnosed infants aged <18 months: Results from a nationwide surveillance in Nigeria

    The study found a high prevalence of pretreatment HIV drug resistance, predominantly nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor-based regimen (NNRTI) associated, among HIV-infected children (less than 18 months) in Nigeria. The findings support using a non-NNRTI regimen in children less than 3 years of age as a preferred first-line antiretroviral treatment regimen, as recommended by the World Health Organization. Child-friendly, fixed-dose, combination co-formulated drugs need to be widely available in the country.

    Importance of risk perception: Predictors of PrEP acceptance among Thai MSM and TG women at a community-based health service

    HIV risk perception is an important factor in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This paper presents how self-risk perception plays an important role in whether men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TG) initiate PrEP. The authors state the need to assess a patient’s risk perception and provide HIV education and counseling that will improve the accuracy of perceived HIV risk.

    HIV prevalence, risky behaviors and discrimination experiences among transgender women in Cambodia: Descriptive findings from a national integrated biological and behavioral survey

    This paper summarizes descriptive findings and policy implications on HIV prevention among transgender women in Cambodia. The authors concluded that the high prevalence of HIV, sexually transmitted infections and related risk behaviors among this population is of great concern. The authors suggest there is an urgent need to further expand tailored prevention interventions that focus on individual, social and structural drivers of HIV.

    Lubricant use among men who have sex with men reporting anal intercourse in Bangkok, Thailand: Impact of HIV status and implications for prevention

    This study measured prevalence and correlates of consistent lubricant use during anal sex among men who have sex with men in Bangkok, Thailand, a population among whom HIV incidence is very high. A key finding was a high rate of reported consistent lubricant use that was associated with reported consistent condom use with casual partners while binge drinking and paying for sex. Reported inconsistent condom use with casual and steady partners was negatively associated with lubricant use. Lubricant use is part of the best practice package for HIV prevention among men having sex with men, and programs should consider further promotion among this population.

    Incomplete adherence among treatment-experienced adults on antiretroviral therapy in Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia

    This study shows that at least 48 consecutive hours of missed antiretroviral therapy (ART) is most strongly related to virological failure. Researchers recommend greater attention to neglected individual approaches within health and ART program service delivery, such as involving social science trained counselors.
