    Large-scale social and behavior change communication interventions have sustained impacts on infant and young child feeding knowledge and practices: Results of a 2-year follow-up study in Bangladesh

    This article assesses the changes in exposure and infant and young child feeding knowledge and practices after a social behavior change program ended. The findings indicate that improvements in maternal knowledge and practices related to infant and young child feeding can be sustained for at least two years. The authors also found that exposure to interpersonal counseling decreased slightly, community mobilization decreased substantially and recall of mass media messaging remained unchanged after the end of the project.

    Timely introduction of complementary feeding among caregivers of children 6-12 months, Sodo Town, Ethiopia

    The World Health Organization recommends introducing complementary feeding — providing liquids, solid or semisolid foods in addition to breast milk — starting from the age of six months. The study assessed the timely introduction of complementary feeding among caregivers of children ages 6-12 months. The authors found that the proportion of timely introduction of complementary feeding was low and suggest this can be increased by promoting the importance of antenatal care visits, hospital deliveries and health education.

    Using behavior change approaches to improve complementary feeding practices

    Improving complementary feeding of children 6 to 24 months of age requires an understanding of what drives feeding behaviors in specific cultural and economic contexts and which systematic approaches best facilitate beneficial and feasible changes. This paper analyzes social and behavior change approaches and use of program delivery platforms at scale that resulted in documented improvements in Bangladesh, Malawi, Peru and Zambia. The authors conclude that complementary feeding practices, particularly dietary diversity, can be improved rapidly in a variety of settings through available program platforms if interventions focus on specific constraints and strategies encourage caregivers to prepare and feed appropriate foods.
