Partnering with the private sector on nutrition programs helps FHI 360 to provide lifesaving products and services to people in need. These partnerships strengthen our ability to design and deliver innovative, multidisciplinary solutions to address the world’s nutritional challenges.
FHI 360 has partnered with Procter & Gamble, Dr. Reddy’s, Unilever, Kraft, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and BASF to support improved nutrition. We work with these and other partners on a full spectrum of activities, including:
- Market research
- Supplementary food formulation and testing
- Behavior change campaigns
- Technology transfer
- Efforts to build enabling regulatory environments
FHI 360 manages the Kenya Nutrition and HIV Program (NHP), a flagship nutrition program for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Demonstrating our comprehensive approach, NHP strengthens nutritional therapy to those with malnutrition related to HIV or tuberculosis — both in and out of hospital settings. The project shares a cooperative agreement with a Kenyan-owned company, Insta Products Limited, as its private-sector food partner. NHP supports 155 primary sites that, in turn, facilitate work at an additional 261 satellite locations. The project has already exceeded USAID goals by 3.4 times for clients served and 2.8 times for sites covered.
Collaborating with Athena Foods and Nutriset’s Plumpyfield Network in Ghana, FHI 360 customized a ready-to-use, lipid-based nutrition supplement for children under two years of age. We helped to conduct product tests and market feasibility studies, build local manufacturing capability and bring the product to market.
We worked with Procter & Gamble, the Government of Nicaragua and Café Soluble, a local manufacturer, to introduce a fortified drink for pregnant women and schoolchildren. FHI 360 staff contributed to market research, demand creation activities and initiatives to improve the regulatory and tax environments.
