ICPD+15: The Kampala Roadmap to Universal Access to Family Planning

The International Conference on Population and Development (Cairo 1994) brought together faith leaders, clinicians, researchers, program managers, and government officials. They united around a common vision of universal access to reproductive health, education (with a focus on girls and women), and significant reductions in maternal and child mortality. On the fifteenth anniversary of that conference, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reaffirmed the United States’ dedication to the “Cairo commitments” while recognizing we have not yet reached them.

Family Planning: The Essential Link to Achieving All Eight Millennium Development Goals

Why is there renewed emphasis on family planning after 15 years of relative quiet? Perhaps it is because as 2015 approaches, we've realized we're not on target to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Perhaps we've also finally understood that family planning may indeed be "one of the most cost-effective development investments," as the UN Meeting on Maternal Health declared in Ethiopia last month. Here's my take on why family planning is important to achievement of the MDGs...

The Conference Closes, The Mission Continues

The International Conference on Family Planning drew to a close this afternoon in a plenary that included a partners panel, award presentations, re-affirmation of global commitments to family planning, votes of thanks and comments by the Honorable Doctor Syda Bumba, Uganda Minister of State for Finance.
