APRIL 2012 — On April 10, India launched a new e-Family Planning forum. The India Family Planning e-Forum (India e-FP) aims to strengthen family planning policies and programs by engaging in dialogue and sharing evidence on pressing family planning topics in India.

Integrated Behavioral and Biological Assessment: Guidelines for Surveys of Populations at Risk of HIV Infection  

Two rounds of integrated behavioral and biological assessment (IBBA) have played an important role in evaluating The India AIDS Initiative—Avahan—of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Government of India has strengthened second–generation surveillance at the national level using methods and tools developed by the IBBA team of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and FHI 360. This publication can be used by those who wish to carry out similar studies.

FHI 360 collaborates with the Government of India and national and international NGOs to mitigate the impact of HIV, AIDS, and STIs. We

• Train and mentor health care providers, and disseminate standards and guidelines for the prevention and treatment of HIV
• Offer technical assistance to the Indian National AIDS Control Organisation for the development of evidence-based HIV policies and programs
• Develop campaigns for behavior change communication
• Provide comprehensive needs-based services including health, psychosocial support, nutrition, food security, and education to nearly 45,000 HIV-affected households

• Strengthen health systems through technical assistance
• Design quality assurance mechanisms and staff trainings to ensure better governance and management of the health sector, greater community participation, increased accountability, and stronger financial systems

Reproductive Health and Family Planning

FHI 360 supports reproductive health and family planning. We improve access, demand, and quality of family planning and reproductive health service delivery among underserved populations through diligent research.

Learn how we work with the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and other partners on research studies and research utilization activities through PROGRESS in Family Planning.

Supporting Research on Antiretroviral Therapy in India

As the coordinating and operations center for the National Institutes of Health-funded HIV Prevention Trials Network, FHI 360 is providing expertise in site assessment, study design, protocol development, and staff training for a study on the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy in preventing transmission of HIV in couples in which only one partner is infected.

Expanding Contraceptive Options for Indian Couples

To expand the number of contraceptive options available to women and couples, we are studying the factors that lead women to adopt or reject Depo Provera, an injectable contraceptive, as a family planning method. We are also promoting Depo use among women who desire a long-acting method and for whom injectable contraceptives are safe and appropriate.
