Over the past three decades, FHI 360 has determined the safety and efficacy of various intrauterine devices (IUDs), including the Copper T380A. Our research led to development of the largest worldwide database on IUDs. We demonstrated that the IUD 1) neither facilitates sexually transmitted infections nor increases the risk of infertility and 2) can be a safe contraceptive method for appropriately selected HIV-infected women with continuing access to medical care.
In an effort to expand women's contraceptive options, we also helped reintroduce the IUD in several countries where its use and supply had fallen off dramatically.
USAID's Maximizing Access and Quality Initiative, of which FHI 360 is a member, has developed an IUD toolkit that provides comprehensive, standardized, scientifically accurate, and evidence-based information on the IUD. It also provides guidance on best practices as well as tools to help improve access to and quality of services.
