The training and reference guides for family planning screening checklists are a series of five publications designed for program managers, administrators, trainers, and service providers interested in learning how to use the checklists to screen women wishing to initiate use of combined oral contraceptives (COCs), injectables (DMPA and NET-EN), the copper intrauterine device (IUD), and implants. The fifth guide trains providers to use the Pregnancy Checklist.

The guides, developed with support from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), are designed to serve as both training and reference tools, as follows:

  • As a training tool, each guide provides a four-to-six-hour curriculum for training service providers to use the related checklist and collateral materials for use during the training.
  • As a reference tool, each guide provides reference information to supplement the training. This information includes a collection of essential, up-to-date reference materials; recommendations for adapting the checklist to the local context; basic, evidence-based information on the specific family planning method; and an annotated bibliography.
