Ensuring Successful Community-based Research

APRIL 2011—Scientists have discovered a unique biological control technique that could offer an environmentally safe, sustainable, and cost effective measure to control the dengue virus. Dengue—contracted from the bite of a striped Aedes aegypti mosquito—  can be found in most tropical areas, and an estimated 2.5 billion live in places where dengue is endemic.  Developed as part of a large, multi-organizational research program known as Eliminate Dengue, this new approach could prevent the spread of dengue without relying on community behavioral change or insecticide products.

The overarching approach linking the two programs is one of integration, building on what exists. Examining both programs in depth offers valuable lessons for program planners seeking to integrate mental health services for people living with HIV.
