Bridging Adult-youth Communication Gulf for Better Health

woman in orange headscarfMARCH 2012 — The Daraja ("bridge") project brings together youth ages 15-24 and adults to talk about difficult issues such as sexuality and HIV. While participants gain reproductive health knowledge, they practice talking across generational differences, build trust and strengthen the support networks that help youth make important life decisions.

Integrating Family Planning with HIV in Tanzania

family planning client with her childMAY 2011—Through policy and service-delivery changes, Tanzania's Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOH) champions the cause of mainstreaming family planning into HIV care and treatment. This, despite the challenges that stymied integration in the early days of the epidemic. Today, improved access to antiretroviral therapy has transformed HIV into a chronic condition to be managed with treatment and a healthy lifestyle. Now, with support from FHI and others, the MOH is placing greater emphasis on family planning.

Empowering Girls in Tanzania to Control Their Own Destinies

FHI staffAUGUST 2010 —Girls' Power conferences in Tanzania give girls and young women ages 10 to 24 the confidence and tools to avoid early pregnancy and HIV infection and be in control of their own lives. The conferences have been held since 2004 under Ishi, a national behavior-change initiative by and for youth that is managed and implemented by FHI with support from USAID and UNICEF.

Through its portfolio of research, FHI 360 informs policies and practices in familyplanning, reproductive health, and HIV prevention and care. The major thrust of our work in Tanzania is reducing the burden of HIV, especially among most-at-risk populations and young people.

National Family Planning Costed Implementation Program

Contributing to National Guidelines and Standards

APRIL 2010 — FHI Tanzania has been helping the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to develop national guidelines and standards. These address the management of HIV and AIDS; improving the quality of care, support, and protection of Tanzania's most vulnerable children; and standards for peer education for young people.

TUNAJALI Offers Home-based HIV Counseling and Testing

TUNAJALI volunteerMARCH 2010 — The February newsletter of the TUNAJALI Community Care for People Living with HIV/AIDS and Orphans and Vulnerable Children Project details an initiative that brings HIV testing and counseling to the homes of people at risk of infection, instead of waiting for them to overcome stigma and go to a fixed or mobile location to access these services.
