FHI Helps Establish State-of-the-Art TB Lab in Nigeria

LJ mediaMARCH 2011 — Nigerians have new hope for TB treatment. A biosafety level-3 lab is operating at the Dr. Lawrence Henshaw Memorial Hospital in Cross River State. A first in the West African subregion, the state-of-the-art lab is addressing the threat that TB and drug-resistant TB pose to Nigerians, especially those who are HIV-positive.

Launching Lifesaving Early Infant Diagnosis in Nigeria

Lab workerMAY 2010 — Early diagnosis of infants exposed to HIV is now possible in Nigeria's North East zone, following the development and launch of the Jalingo early infant diagnosis (EID) network. The development of an EID laboratory, the first of its kind in this part of the country, began in response to the delay in diagnosing children exposed to HIV. This network was developed by the governments of Adamawa and Taraba states in collaboration with the Federal Medical Center, Yola, and facilitated by the FHI-led Global HIV/AIDS Initiative Nigeria (GHAIN).

Restoring Dignity While Saving Lives

MARCH 2010 – A recent visit to an FHI-supported hospital in Nigeria has brought new attention to the principles of the Global Health Initiative and the importance of health systems strengthening for improving HIV/AIDS service delivery. Ambassador Eric Goosby, US Global AIDS Coordinator, and Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Program on AIDS (UNAIDS), toured HIV/AIDS service points at Maitama District Hospital (MDH) in Nigeria's capital city, Abuja, in February.

FHI Works with Partners to Improve Knowledge of Family Planning among Providers and Clients in Nigeria

  • With Abt Associates, FHI is evaluating the introduction of a wellness care and preventive health services program (including family planning, malaria control and prevention, childhood immunization, and nutrition) to private health practices participating in a health maintenance organization (HMO). Our researchers are determining whether the program has improved HMO providers' knowledge and provision of wellness services and whether HMO clients are satisfied with these new services.

  • FHI is collaborating with Development Research and Project Centre (dRPC) in Kano, Nigeria to identify ways to improve family planning and child spacing among young married couples in northern Nigeria. Our research team will use a participatory learning approach, which will increase awareness of family planning among community members.

End-of-Project Report for Strengthening Nigeria's Response to HIV and AIDS Program (SNR)

AUGUST 2009 — The SNR Program (2004–2009) aimed to address the technical, human, and financial capacity and resources needed for states and communities to take charge of and implement a coordinated, effective, and sustainable multisectoral local response to HIV and AIDS. The SNR program's achievements included results on the national, loca, and community levels.
